@01:42Again, a little help with the sound.

First off I couldn't figure out where to put this, but the footsteps are going to be at different volumes depending on how distant the camera is.
That can be helped by having the video be separate from the rendered video and then added on later with Premier or After Effects or something.

Keeping that in mind, the smack with the ground seemed overpowering and didn't work at all well with the music (which I would suggest changing after all the jerks and swings start happening)

@02:18I love your attention to detail! Especially in the reflections!
I like the design of the characters(robots, I assume?)
I was not expecting any type of action scenes so you startled me. It looks great!
Nice movements and viewpoints. I love the panning of the camera to get a better angle of the poses!
The only thing I dislike about this is that it is a bit too dark for me to see exactly what is going on. The illumination helps though.

@02:45You do an exceptional job conveying emotion and thought with just body language.

I feel a bit sorry fr the White Robot here, because he was curious and awakening to a new environment, he finds his only company, who immediately tries to harm him. In his desire for self preservation he kills his only companion. He leads him self to an existence of solitude, a he realizes he has just killed another. Its almost like you can see it on his face as he ponders the blood.

@01:04I think your animation is great, but just wanted to comment about this annotation. Head and upper body movement is really dependent on the person. Many people walk with out head movement, though most of these people have had some type of regimented training. I.e. Military or police, often Drill and Ceremony dictates a type of walking that does not allow the head or shoulders to bob up and down at all. So that the head stay at a constant level as they progress. So walking in regards to this, is really just a matter of your environment and experiences.

Outside of that, I'm not sure if it's my connection or not, but for a bit the steps don't match the foot fall sounds.

I'd love to see the animation developed more into a few more shorts. Your works says "there is more here" to me, and makes me curious to see what the "more" is.

This was completed in about half a semester as my final project for Animation 1 at Rennsellaer Polytechnic Institute.
It's my first serious attempt at doing anything complex in Maya.

The goal of the project was to emphasize gesture and animation of humanesque forms. Any critique on quality of animation or things that could be added would be appreciated. =)
(PS: I do realize it's too dark. For some reason uploading on Deviantart kills the video quality and darkens it slightly, so that the secondary prenumbra on the spotlights disappears. It's unfortunate, but I can't find a way to fix it as of yet.)

All credit for the music goes to Joel Nielsen, who was awesome enough to let me use some of his uploaded demo-tracks as background. =) I think it adds a lot to the piece.

Kodoku by ~pathen is a magnificent animation, with amazing lighting, timing and acting, but whats most interesting to me is the depth of subtle details and hints about what lies beyond the brief glimpse we get into this world. ( Suggested by FacundoDiaz and Featured by Marker-Guru )

I've watched this animation probably over 100 times since I first spotted it about five years ago (I made my first account back in '06 then switched to this one for a name switch before premium members had the option to change their names) and it is, to date, one of my favorite pieces on this website.
Your characters, despite being machines, feel so human. There is confusion, anger, pain, and like the title says, loneliness. As a prospective animation student, it's very humbling to see such great talent and skill balled into one person. Thank you for sharing this project.

If I get accepted at the Art Institute, I'll be using the newest version of Maya, so it's especially great to what a version from six years ago can do.

Again, thank you for sharing this with the world.

PPS: I've been really bad about watching my DA page. Each time I come back and I'm surprised by how many comments show up here. ^^; I am beginning to get embarrassed in the face of much better animators than myself.

A lot of people have been asking what program(s) were used to make Kodoku. All of the modeling and animation was done in Maya 8.5, vanilla. AfterEffects was used to turn the .iff frames into clips, and Premiere was used to do all the cobbling and editing of the original scenes.

I was working from a "comic" storyboard I'd made for myself, and used twenty separate scenes to build each "cut" in a separate file to keep things clean.

I hope that answers any questions anyone had. :)

I love the animation. You're obviously an above average 3d modeler and an EXCEPTIONAL 3d animator. The movements weren't stiff and rigid like I've seen in others the the reflection was perfect and so was the lighting. The only thing I didn't like is when the blue robot got oil on his left arm after disabling the black robot. The oil was a little too reflective. you could've maybe used a texture in there that made look a little bit more pasty and have a color refraction like in normal oil (when I look at oil, I see some color in it kind of blue and reddish when it's being reflected in the light)

btw, what program are you using. I use Blender 3d

@03:22I really loved the music and how smooth the animation is. The black background is nice with the spotlights. It keeps the attention focused on the two the whole time :) I really thought the white one was done for when the black one punched.

One thing that poped to my mind was that went the white killed the black, it could've held the hand of the black one up to support it for a seconds. It would look as if the black kneels.

@03:22I actually felt sorry for Robot 1 when it appeared to be punched out here, very well done and I love the twist ending. It's sad to see that the cycle will continue but that is a PERFECT example of our world today. It would just take that one robot to NOT fight and there could be peace between them.

(Its like ganking in WoW for those that know it, if nobody ganked in the first place it would be a much more peaceful game. Instead everyone feels they must get revenge once they are powerful enough to do so and to not be killed is the most suprising thing that will ever happen.)
